The Handsworth Sword Dancers are delighted to be bringing the Sword Dance Union Longsword Competition to Sheffield in October 2023.
Friday 13 October
6pm onwards: Welcome drinks and opportunity for song and music session hosted by Handsworth Sword Dancers in a city-centre venue with good beer and pizzas.
Saturday 14 October
09:00 – 10:00: teams to register at Channing Hall
10:30 – 13:00: public display spots at Winter Gardens, Town Hall and Orchard Square
11:00 – 13:00: morning public competition performances at Channing Hall
14:00 – 17:00: afternoon competition performances at Croft House Hall
17:00 – awards ceremony
There will be a number of awards up for grabs:
- Best Traditional Dance
- Best Own / Non-Traditional Dance
- Longsword as a Second Language (for teams whose primary dance is not sword dancing)
- Best Overall Performance
- Best Music
- Audience Reaction
Teams will perform their competition entries at two judged spots and the scores will be aggragated across performances.
All venues will be within easy walking distance of city centre hotels. Below are some suggestions, but a quick Google will find many more! Alternatively there are plenty of Airbnb options.

We’re also hoping to be able to offer some secure, city-centre hardstanding for campervans; we’ll provide more details soon.
All venues will be walkable from Sheffield train station and/or the Supertram network.
Park and ride is available from a number of locations; Nunnery Square is on the main road in from the M1.
Sheffield’s clean air zone covers all of the city centre and ring road. Private cars are exempt from charges, but if you are bringing a van you may have to pay – more details here.
